Swedish grower works without sunlight or soil

Swedish grower Ellinor Helgeson has been growing flowers and herbs for a year on the top floor of a warehouse near Växjö in Sweden. Parsley, thyme and various types of lettuce do really well in her vertical greenhouse.

The crops are grown using hydroponics. They are planted in a minimal amount of peat, in rows that are pushed into cultivation towers and are fed by nutrient-enriched water that runs downwards through a special system. The temperature is kept at about 24 degrees, and thanks to the LED lamps there is sufficient light. This way she can cultivate all year round.
