The Global Greenhouse in Des Moines, run by Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), supports immigrant and refugee farmers in the Global Greens program. This initiative helps participants rebuild agricultural livelihoods by providing land, training, and market access.
The greenhouse extends Iowa's short growing season by allowing farmers to start crops earlier and increase yields. This is especially important for culturally specific produce that serves immigrant communities and local markets. Farmers sell their goods through farmers markets, CSA programs, and direct sales, creating income opportunities and pathways to small business ownership.
In addition to production, the greenhouse serves as a learning hub where participants gain experience with greenhouse growing techniques and business skills. Many farmers come from regions with different climates, so this training is essential for adapting to U.S. agriculture.
The program has already supported hundreds of farmers, and the new greenhouse expands its reach and capacity. However, funding challenges due to federal cuts pose a risk. LSI is working to offset this by exploring alternative income sources, such as plant sales and community support.
