from chalk to screen at Bejo Zaden Vietnam:

Asia: Better growth in Vietnam with smart screen installation

The team of Luiten Greenhouses B.V. will soon supply screen systems that will be installed in the plastic greenhouses of Bejo Zaden. These two are Dutch companies, but the activities are taking place in Vietnam.

Luiten has long been active on the Vietnamese market and Bejo Zaden has been active here for a long time as well. In Vietnam, Bejo Zaden produces hybrid seeds for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants and others. Dutchman Ron van Winden is general manager of the Vietnamese branch. Also because of his knowledge of Dutch horticulture, the choice was quickly made for the screen installations of Luiten, executed with cloth from Ridder Climate screens.

The size of the greenhouses is in total about 2.8 hectares, and they are used for seed production. They were set up about three years ago. "At first they used chalk, but on dark days chalk just works against you," Kick Jansen of Luiten Greenhouses says. "The site is in Langdong and regularly it may be cool and cloudy over there. This is when cloth screens are more advantageous."

To install a screen system in an existing greenhouse is no problem for Luiten Greenhouses. "But a plastic greenhouse in Vietnam is slightly more difficult," said Kick. "The greenhouse is not designed for it, so you have to be more creative because sometimes certain things are in the way and need to be changed or modified. Then it comes down to proper fitting, measuring, communication and actually above all proper selection, observing and checking."

For Luiten it's a nice job. Not only because it is a great project, but also because Vietnamese horticulture is in motion. "The market still has to be developed, but you can see that many companies want to make the next step. It is striking that in politics and in middle management there are a lot of women in key positions in purchasing," said Kick. "In horticulture you still see many low-tech plastic greenhouses, but the market is developing. The choice for low-tech plastic greenhouses is made because of cost considerations, but outfitted with additional technical systems to deliver a better quality."
