Helien Verhagen, East4Fresh:

"Growing Asian vegetables in Portugal looks promising"

The Dutch company, East4Fresh, has begun the larger scale cultivation of vegetables in Portugal. "We are testing many products, and they are thriving in the Portuguese soil," says Helien Verhagen who is the company's Managing Director.

"Our Portuguese assortment includes Asian vegetables such as Shanghai and Mini pak choi, choy sam, and kai choi. However, there is also turmeric, edamame beans, and sweet potatoes in four different colors. Here the Japanese Murasaki is included."

"The weather conditions in Portugal are perfect for growing vegetables. At the moment, we are benefiting the shortages in Spain. We can supply certain products year-round; others we supplement with products cultivated in the Netherland", she explains.

"When it comes to, for example, quality, the Portuguese sweet potatoes are incomparable to the Spanish product. They are more on par with the North American product."

"We supply niché products. Every year, we try to introduce five of six new items to the retail sector. From, for example, fresh wasabi to fresh black figs from Peru. Here, we focus on professional retailers. They are mostly from countries like Germany and the United Kingdom. We enjoy working with them", concludes Helien .
