In January 2015 Howitec Netting b.v. introduced its new insect net against the Drosophila suzukii, the Ornata Air Plus 77102, at the ISCF-conference in ’s-Hertogenbosch.
Drosophila suzukii is a fruit crop pest and it is a serious economic threat to soft summer fruit; i.e., cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, grapes and others.
Unlike the ordinary fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, the Asian fruit fly Drosophila suzukii (suzukii fly) affects also unripe fruit.
Now, almost a year later, this net will be presented, with one season of experience, at the ExpoSe 2015, the leading exhibition for the international asparagus and strawberry trade in Karlsruhe, Germany, from 18th to 19th November. Tests were performed at research-stations in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Norway with success.
In practice, the net was used in 2015 in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, UK and Norway as well on cherries as other soft summer fruit.
The special features of the Ornata Air Plus 77102 are the size of the mesh and the thickness of the yarn, which create a better light transmission and ventilation.
Besides this DS-net, nets like
- Columba Plus (an anti-hail net for strawberries),
- Howicover (a multifunctional climate net),
- Carnea Plus (a support net for soft summer fruit),
- Fraga (a strawberry-support net) and
- Coclea (a slug screen for strawberries) will be shown at this event.
