Patatas Meléndez has launched the new potato campaign in Spain through a greenhouse growing project in the municipality of Aznalcázar, Seville, bringing national supply forward by three weeks compared to the traditional calendar while improving water efficiency and significantly reducing CO₂ emissions linked to imports.

Developed in collaboration with farmers from Meléndez x Origen and the company's technical team, the model of cultivation in protected environments responds directly to the climate challenges facing Spanish agriculture, including irregular rainfall and extreme temperatures that disrupt production cycles. The facilities in Aznalcázar are equipped with automated systems to control temperature, relative humidity, and precision drip irrigation.

The new potato produced maintains all the defining characteristics of a seasonal product, with its organoleptic properties intact: thin skin, freshness, and optimal maturity for fresh consumption. With 100% national origin and full traceability from field to point of sale, the project reinforces Patatas Meléndez's commitment to quality and sustainability, offering both retailers and end consumers a more continuous supply over a longer period of the year.
This approach adds to the system rather than replacing it. It does not substitute the traditional open field cycle, but supports and complements it by reducing environmental impact, improving agronomic control, and maintaining the same flavor and quality that define Spanish potatoes. The innovation is not intended to replace conventional cultivation, but to act as a complementary tool to stabilize national supply under increasingly volatile climate conditions, ensuring profitability for growers and a stable supply for the industry.

The development is part of the Meléndez x Origen strategy, a collaborative model that brings together local growers, advanced technology, and certified sustainability protocols. It also opens new opportunities for the province of Seville, traditionally linked to berry production, by diversifying its horticultural offer with a high value product such as new potatoes.
Through this approach, Patatas Meléndez also aims to extend the presence of domestic product in the market, reducing reliance on imports and reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and quality.
