In a context where sustainability and productive efficiency are shaping modern horticulture, Valimex SL is introducing Growcoon in Spain. Growcoon is a biodegradable root ball holder developed by Maan Biobased Products. It is marketed exclusively by Klasmann-Deilmann, with Valimex as the exclusive distributor in Spain.

"Growcoon is a compact basket crafted from biodegradable material, designed to be placed directly into propagation trays. This system promotes improved rooting across a diverse range of crop species, including ornamentals, aromatic plants, and berries," stated Elías Ciruelos, Director of the Agro Division at Valimex.
Shorter growth cycles and fewer plant losses
A key benefit highlighted by Valimex's technical team is the significant reduction in propagation cycle times. We have found that, in aromatic and ornamental crops, plants can be removed earlier from the tray without compromising their quality," Ciruelos stated.

The result is twofold:
- The production speed is enhanced due to quicker and more uniform root growth.
- There is less plant loss because the root ball retains its structure during handling, leading to more stable and uniform transplants.

"In the berry segment, the impact is even more noticeable. In blueberry and raspberry, we see very positive results. Many growers are recovering their investment in Growcoon and its dispensers simply by decreasing losses during the initial weeks of cultivation," Ciruelos added.
Custom manufacturing and automation
Growcoon is a fully customizable product designed to fit various tray sizes and types. It is made to meet the specific needs of each grower and crop type. When inserted into the tray before filling, it allows the use of any substrate the grower prefers, providing greater flexibility to tailor the mix to the unique conditions of each crop and propagation strategy.

To keep up with the fast-paced environment of professional nurseries, Valimex offers both automatic and manual dispensers capable of handling thousands of units per hour in trays, allowing Growcoon to be integrated into high-volume production lines without disrupting workflow.
Initially, there was concern about the root ball holder remaining in the substrate after transplanting. "Growcoon degrades completely without leaving any residues or impacting the crop. There are various versions designed with different degradation rates to meet diverse needs," Ciruelos emphasized.

International projection
While Spain consolidates the system in ornamental and berry nurseries, Latin America has already begun its first trials via Klasmann-Deilmann's international network.
Founded in 1972, Valimex SL operates through three strategic divisions: Feed & Food, International, and Agro. The Agro division has pioneered the use of Spaghnum blond peat-based substrates in Spain and has been importing coconut fiber, bamboo stakes, and other technical materials for nurseries and professional agriculture.
"Valimex has been working with Klasmann-Deilmann for decades, one of the most influential companies in the peat and substrates industry. Our goal is clear: to guarantee the highest quality at every stage of cultivation, supporting the grower with innovative and reliable solutions," concluded Ciruelos.
