Red bell pepper making a difference this year

Over the past few years, a trend has been rewarding greenhouse bell pepper growers, especially when it comes to the most popular varieties on the market. This is particularly true for "half oblong" types, grown mainly in Sicily for the Italian market.

Angelo Scollo

FreshPlaza talked about it with Angelo Scollo, owner of a company located in Vittoria (RG), which grows Cariddi red bell peppers by Seminis.

"This year, the best batches - especially red bell pepper ones - reached production prices of €3/kg and stabilized over the long period with quotations exceeding €2/kg, which have slightly dropped below that level only over the past few days. Since we have specialized in the cultivation of this product, our sales have improved considerably. Of course this year we were helped by the lack of the Spanish produce, which generally influences the foreign markets more."

"We usually transplant bell peppers in late November and have noticed that Cariddi withstands the winter season well even with very low temperatures. Another strength is the fact that it is an early variety, so our products can be available in early spring, which leads to a higher profit especially since quality is high. The color, grades and shelf-life stand out and plants produce plenty of fruits also on top trusses, which guarantees considerable yields."

Azienda agricola Scollo covers 10 hectares of greenhouses, half of which dedicated to fall and winter transplants with Cariddi bell peppers, while the rest is destined to Sumum cucumbers. Summer transplants are dedicated to growing SV1201TC plum tomatoes.
