Work hard first, then relax with a movie

Will Netflix help growers to find enough employees?

Dutch tomato grower Schenkeveld does its best to get plenty of young people into the greenhouses. After all, someone has to pick the tomatoes. That’s why the company now offers young people three months of Videoland, a Dutch equivalent to Netflix, for free, in exchange for working very hard - and of course on top of a salary. Last year, they offered a free iPhone X (link to Dutch article). A good employee is worth a lot for the tomato growers.

“Every summer, new students are needed to get the job done in the greenhouses. Besides, students create a good atmosphere, and it’s great that we can take care of the holiday plans of our other employees this way. It’s a win-win-win situation, as it were,” says Rokien Schenkeveld.

School-leavers in particular are facing a long summer. “Working a few mornings per week allows them to earn some money in a great environment, and then do fun things in their free time. Additionally, we show the pupils that a future in horticulture can be very fun. Due to an increase in size and continued automation, a lot of wonderful jobs were created in horticulture in recent years.”

With bQurius, Schenkeveld organised a Battle between office and production last year, for example. A group of more than 30 pupils came to watch the Battle. They saw what both departments of horticulture can offer them.
