clean greenhouses offer chance for clean start

Turkey: Growers in Antalya hopeful about crop without tuta absoluta

As the production season is slowly moving from open fields to greenhouses, growers in Antalya are making preparations in order to battle tuta absoluta disease and Mediterranean fruit fly which caused a lot of problems for them last year.

Training courses were given to growers where they were given detailed information about methods to fight this disease. Growers were also told that covering greenhouses with a net, making sure that its surroundings are clean and removing the waste in a proper way will solve 60 – 70 % of the problem. They are also warned about the misuse of chemicals which may not only damage products but increase their costs.

Officials are also planning to implement fly sterilization method and have visited various farms in Spain to learn more about the use of this method. Growers organizations have also pointed out that all growers need to participate in these efforts to ensure its success.
Ministry officials and local agricultural offices are planning to visit all greenhouses one by one to make sure that all the necessary precautions are taken.
