US (FL): Marion school district wants to feed thousands with hydroponics
The movement is part of the Farm to School initiative spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The district is launching a Farm to School location at Vanguard High School, which just received $100,000 in funding from two agencies to get the hydroponics garden off the ground.
In just a few months, Vanguard officials hope the garden will supply the school cafeteria with all the romaine lettuce it needs for lunchtime salads. And within a few years, officials hope the garden also will supply the cafeteria with all the salad toppings, such as tomatoes and carrots.
“We hope to grow enough vegetables to provide all the salads at Vanguard High and enough for a few nearby (elementary) schools,” said Jeremy Rhodes, a Vanguard High science teacher and one of several teachers who will be working on the project.
