Greenhouse pepper grower Antonie Teeuwen:

"Dehumidification with the Covent system works”"

Antonie Teeuwen of Dutch pepper company Teegrow is excited about the benefits of the New Cultivation System. The Covent system in particular works to his satisfaction.

“Last year we started growing according to The New Cultivation, using the Covent system in our new greenhouse. In 2011 we added another 4 ha. and now we cultivate a total of 8 ha. of peppers. Our company is located in the horticultural area in Grashoek, North Limburg. Since 1999 we have grown both red and green peppers.”

Energy preservation is a must
“Energy preservation has played a crucial part in the decision making,” says Teeuwen. “We believe in the possibilities of the New Cultivation and therefore chose to dehumidify the air through the Covent system. It is a relatively small installation that nevertheless allows us to refresh 4 m3 of air per m2. We also installed a system that stores excess heat in the soil. Adhering to the principles of the New Cultivation was somewhat tricky in the first season, because you’re still in the dark about so many things. All in all we achieved a pretty good growth, but we didn’t actually save any energy. So that is something we’re working on right now.”

Dehumidification
Conditions are very different this season, says Teeuwen: “There’s a lot of humidity, and the current system does a great job dehumidifying the place. We can shut the screen for longer periods of time and I expect that we’ll be much more economical when it comes to energy. We also work with a dual screen, the top screen is XLS-10 and the second screen is an AC-foil. This foil we use for the second year now, and it works out well.
