The Vienna-based family business Weidenauer began specializing in the production of young plants three decades ago. Each year, the company produces approximately 45 million young plants across 1.8 hectares of greenhouse space. This makes it an important partner for vegetable growers and nurseries. Production is done to order. "Customers can also choose whether they want conventional or organic produce," says junior manager Barbara Weidenauer. She also makes it a priority to accommodate customer requests, "because our small size makes that easy to do."

Insights into young plant production
The business has few problems with pests, as all plants are grown under glass. Furthermore, "They're so small, the soil is sterile, the environment is well-ventilated, and above all, we monitor their health several times a day," explains Weidenauer. The only challenge is fungi, which can develop due to the humidity in the greenhouse. Since they took over, they have purchased a new seeder, modernized the IT system, and carried out renovations on the premises. "We rely heavily on machinery, so everything has to work and be perfectly aligned." There is also an automated irrigation system that supplies the plants with water depending on the amount of sunlight.
