Uzbekistan sets strict environmental rules for greenhouse operations

The State Environmental Expertise Center of Uzbekistan has clarified the requirements and restrictions for greenhouse operations to ensure environmental safety and sustainability. According to Shahzoda Akramova, the head of the center's press service, all greenhouses using natural gas, coal, or other fuels for heating must undergo mandatory State Environmental Expertise approval. However, small home-based greenhouses are exempt from this requirement.

To obtain approval, greenhouse owners must submit several documents, including a sanitary-epidemiological assessment for greenhouses near residential areas and others.

Several practices are strictly prohibited in greenhouse operations, such as:

  • Using drinking water for irrigation without special permission.
  • Releasing untreated wastewater into sewage systems or natural water sources.
  • Burning toxic waste as fuel.
  • Operating boilers without effective dust and gas filters.
  • Storing coal and ash in open areas.

Greenhouses must also follow strict environmental standards, including using water-saving and renewable energy technologies, sorting and recycling waste, and regularly maintaining equipment to ensure safety and sustainability.
