Belarus expands greenhouse farming to reduce import dependence

Belarus is actively developing greenhouse vegetable farming to ensure a steady supply of fresh produce throughout the year. As part of the country's strategy for 2023–2027, greenhouse production is increasing, with a focus on cucumbers and tomatoes.

One of the key farms involved in this effort is the "Rassvet" greenhouse complex in Kirovsky District. The facility spans ten hectares, including three hectares of modern energy-efficient greenhouses. In 2023, it introduced supplemental lighting to accelerate plant growth. With this technology, cucumbers are now harvested three times a year instead of two.

The first crops grown under artificial lighting were planted in October 2023, with the first harvest collected in December. Despite initial challenges, the results have been positive. By mid-February 2025, the farm had already harvested 200 tons of cucumbers. In total, over 700 tons were produced in 2024. Tomatoes are also being tested, but the primary focus remains on cucumbers.

Given the success of the project, plans are in place to expand the illuminated greenhouse area by another 1.5 hectares. The farm supplies the domestic market first and also exports vegetables, including apples, beets, potatoes, and tomatoes. In 2024, exports totaled $224,000, a 37% increase from the previous year.
