St. John's United is extending its mission into downtown Billings.
This expansion is marked by the grand opening of the St. John's United Urban Horticulture Education Center Greenhouse, a significant milestone for the Billings community. Notable figures such as Mayor Bill Cole and BPS Superintendent Dr. Erwin Garcia will join the festivities at 502 N. 30th St. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
This dedication ceremony commemorates a remarkable public-private partnership between two community-focused organizations: Billings Public Schools and St. John's United. Together, they have forged a unique collaboration aimed at supplying St. John's residents with a steady source of fresh produce while also creating an educational hub for students.
The Greenhouse, utilizing state-of-the-art aeroponic farming techniques, cultivates fresh, organic produce for residents at every level of care, from independent living to skilled nursing and memory care. Remarkably, residents can also participate in this initiative by volunteering at the UHEC Greenhouse, offering them the opportunity to work alongside students and establish meaningful intergenerational connections.
What sets this project apart is the innovative aeroponic farming method employed. This groundbreaking approach allows for the growth of food in vertical towers without the need for soil or pesticides. Compared to traditional farming methods, it uses a mere 5% of the water and 10% of the space.
