Erich Herret of BODENSTARK Bio Ltd. from Vienna:

"Earthworms have slowly been coming back for the past few years"

The Herret family business has decades of experience in vegetable cultivation. With the BODENSTARK brand, it is now going back to its roots, growing organic vegetables at two locations. In Vienna-Simmering, organic vegetables have been grown in an area of about 1.4 hectares since 2018. By using compost, green manure, and regularly changing crops, the soil is enriched with nutrients, thus providing the ideal conditions for high-quality vegetables. In summer, the focus lies on different varieties of tomatoes and cucumbers, while in winter, lettuces, herbs, pak choi, and many other winter vegetables grow. Every year, new crops are added that harmonize perfectly with the yearly cycle.

"When I look at the soil, I see how the earthworms have slowly been coming back for a few years. At first, they were only in the marginal areas, but now they are distributed in large numbers over the entire area," farm manager Erich Herret said when talking to Gastro News about the improved biodiversity.

In late 2022, Erich converted the first part of his 1.2-hectare farm on Mitterweg to organic, supported by his daughter Katrin and six employees. At the moment, part of the farm on Mitterberg is still managed conventionally, a small part is being converted to BODENSTARK organic. The organic vegetables are marketed under the new Bodenstark brand.
