$50,000 grant to expand West Ward community farm

US (PA): ‘A greenhouse is the heartbeat of a garden’

The Easton Area Neighborhood Center hauled in a whopping 11,000 pounds of vegetables and fruits from its tiny 2-acre farm last year.

That food went toward feeding Easton’s West Ward and local families in need of assistance, but Program Director Jake Williams has set higher goals for the organization in coming years.
“I’m optimistic we can do more for the community,” Williams said.

Easton Area Neighborhood Center received a $50,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in January to build a greenhouse and expand the urban farm’s existing area to increase its production and outreach programs.

Details about the plan’s layout are still being decided, but Williams said the playground on the property would be moved several feet closer to the center’s community pavilion to create a more cohesive and safer play area for children.
