Russia: Breeding center to be created in Moscow region

The government of the Moscow region is planning to create a breeding center for developing various varieties of fruit and berries. As the Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Moscow region, Mr. Andrey Razin has announced there will also be a test field for seeds approbation. It is planned to include other vegetables than cucumbers and tomatoes in the selection process.

In 2019, the region plans to harvest 80 thousand tons of greenhouse vegetables, which would exceed last year's harvest by 20 thousand tons.

“Last year we collected about 63 thousand tons of greenhouse vegetables. The results of the first five months of the current year show that we have collected over 30 thousand tons. With that, the biggest crops are collected in the winter months. Thus, I believe, we will approach 80 thousand tons by the end of the year”, mentioned Mr. Razin.

In 2018, the enterprises in the Moscow region have set a regional record, having grown over 60 thousand tons of greenhouse produce. That allowed for meeting their own demand in such vegetables, i.e. provide each resident of the region with 13 kg of such produce. The volume has increased 10 times since 2014. Greenhouses in the Moscow region mainly grow tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants.
