Why the future of growing strawberries in Australia may be up in the air

The future of Australian strawberry growing could literally be up in the air, with farmers following an international trend that takes the back-breaking work out of picking the fruit.

The families behind Taste 'N' See near Caboolture, have created what they have dubbed 'The Hanging Gardens of Bellmere', converting 22 hectares of their strawberry farms to tabletop production.

There is no soil involved, instead the fruiting plants cascade from substrate (a coconut fibre mix called coir) and are drip fed water and nutrients through a hydroponic system.
