Chicago show coincides with new greenhouse opening

For one greenhouse company, having a major trade show located in the city you’re about to open your next greenhouse in is proving perfect timing.

Brooklyn, NY-based Gotham Greens broke ground last spring on its second urban greenhouse in Chicago, Ill. (Its first 75,000 square foot Chicago greenhouse opened in 2015.) The new greenhouse, which will grow Gotham's line of premium quality leafy greens and herbs will open this fall 2019.

So returning as an exhibitor for the fourth time to the upcoming United Fresh show June 10-12 in Chicago proved serendipitous. “Since expanding to Chicago in 2015, we’ve seen a strong demand for our brand of locally grown salads, herbs and fresh food products and currently sell to the vast majority of key retailers throughout the region. With our second Chicago greenhouse coming online this fall, we are excited to continue growing our presence throughout the region,” says Gotham’s Nicole Baum.

Gotham's first Chicago greenhouse.

Baum says the show is a great regional event for Gotham to attend. “We see that a lot of the national players within the retail, wholesale and foodservice base are always present there,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity for us to, specifically within the Midwest region, connect with new and existing buyers.”

More expansion coming
The show will also give Gotham the opportunity to discuss its many expansion plans, alongside the new Chicago facility, with visitors. “Last month we announced our expansion to Providence, RI, which will supply local, year-round fresh produce to retailers throughout the North Atlantic region--so from Maine to parts of Connecticut” says Baum.

As a global pioneer in the field of urban agriculture and a leading brand of locally grown salads, herbs and fresh food products, Gotham Greens has expanded their network of urban greenhouses to become a multi-state indoor farming leader and one of the largest greenhouse salad producers in North America.

The company currently operates more than 180,000 square feet of greenhouse in New York and Chicago and has an additional 500,000 square feet of development underway across five U.S. states, including Chicago, Il., Baltimore, MD. and Providence, R.I. Gotham Greens’ network of urban greenhouses across the U.S. will soon supply fresh, hyper-local produce to supermarkets nationally.

“Our innovative model disrupts the conventional supply chain and ensures retailers and consumers have access to fresh, traceable and sustainably grown produce, all year round.” She notes that of its product line, the Butterhead lettuce continues to be a customer favorite as well as basil, which Gotham also uses in their line of fresh food products.

The company will be displaying their line of lettuces, herbs, pesto and salad dressings at the upcoming show (booth 11021) and will also be on display in the New Product Showcase.
