Turkey: Agricultural technician starts growing tomato and lettuce through hydroponic production

Agricultural technician Abdulsamet Talaz started to grow lettuce and tomato through hydroponic production in Bafra, Samsun.

The greenhouse is currently small in size as the young technician is getting more familiar with soilless production and the ambition of the grower is to establish a fully automated greenhouse system and expand his production.

Abdulsamet Talaz: “The products we grow in open fields have very limited added value. We are vulnerable to climate conditions in the open field and the price of the fertilizer, chemicals and fuel is too high, leaving us with very small profit margins. My goal is to move our production to hydroponic production which will reduce fertilizer, chemical and fuel costs and help us improve our margins. I was able to have the first harvest 12 weeks after planting and now I plan to set up a fully automated greenhouse system by taking advantage of state greenhouse funding programs for young growers.”
