Greenhouse butter beans: a typical Belgium product

The first Belgian butter beans from BelOrta are available now. The grower of the year's first greenhouse butter bean is Paul Hermans. They were purchased by Vroegop A.G.F.

Greenhouse butter beans
The first greenhouse butter beans are available again at BelOrta. The acreage of butter beans in Belgium is increasing every year and there are currently 21 butter bean growers at BelOrta. Last year around 40% of the butter beans were grown in the greenhouse and 60% on the open field. The warm summer caused the butter beans to do very well in the open air, but had a negative impact on the greenhouse cultivation.

Last year BelOrta had a total butter bean production of 172,000 kg.

Their supply starts in week 11 and lasts until week 43, with a peak from June. The largest portion is of the Fine variety and of the excellent EE Flandria quality. This typical Belgian product is mainly sold in small packages through Belgian department stores and individually in retail stores. There is also some interest from other countries.
