Pub owners Young's has been accused of cashing in on the clean-eating craze and ripping off vegans; meat eaters can dine on two 6 ounce sirloin steaks with triple cooked chips and watercress for just £28. But for their vegan customers, it is the same price for two veggie steaks - roasted slices of cauliflower drizzled with oil – served with tomatoes, mushrooms, and olive oil mashed potato.
The offer infuriated many people as you can pick up a whole cauliflower for as little as 70p at a supermarket, whilst meat is more pricey.
Twitter user Jamie Klingler shared a pub board advertising the offer at The Queen's in Primrose Hill: "£28 for two pieces of Cauliflower. That's mental. Like properly mental."
On Twitter, the chain defended the dish and said the vegetarian alternative was of "premium quality". In response to a customer querying the cost difference, Young’s replied: "Both dishes are of premium quality, the vegan dish is an alternative for those who do not eat meat. We also have other options available on our main menus."
