US (VA): Red Sun Farms harvests first crop

The vines are growing high at Red Sun Farms, as the new Dublin facility has been harvesting the first crop of tomatoes during the past couple of weeks.

The ripe, red bounty is coming in a little ahead of schedule, as the first crops were expected in early October, and harvesting started in late September. Although he couldn’t provide the exact number of tomatoes being picked in Dublin, master grower John Secker was able to provide those numbers by a different unit of measure.

“When we do benchmarking in this industry, we always break things down to square meter, including labour costs and production, so we focus on total kilos,” said Secker, who originally hails from Vancouver, British Columbia. “Right now, we’re at a little over four kilos per square meter.”
