Algae
Algae is a well-known organism which can grow very rapidly and causes all kinds of problems. There are many different species of algae. It usually concerns a group of relatively simple organisms which, just like plants, use photosynthesis to grow. Algae exists in many different forms. Seaweed is a type of algae which is multicellular and is larger than for example the well-known green sediment caused by a unicellular algae. Most algae use sunlight energy and feel at home in a warmer and humid surrounding. The climate in a greenhouse is therefore the ideal climate for algae and excessive algae growth in ornamental greenhouses is therefore no exception.Algae causes a lot of problems in commercial horticulture. Algae is a source for pathogens which have a negative effect on the health of crops. Algae growth on floors causes slippery surfaces which form danger for staff and other persons. Algae growth also causes silting of the ground cover. This decreases the water permeability of the ground cover resulting in decreased water drainage. Besides all that, the excessive growth causes a pile up of algae which forms a thick layer of infection source.
Test
Intracare has tested the effect of Intra Multi-Des GA on algae in greenhouses. With excellent results! Multi-Des GA is not only capable to efficiently eliminate algae and prevent new growth, the product is capable to do this with a very low dosage in comparison with the originally used product. A 2% Multi-Des GA concentration is sufficient to clean the algae covered surfaces like concrete tiles and ground cover. This greenhouse used a different product based on quaternary ammonium compounds in the past and needed a 6% concentration for a proper result. Intra Multi-Des GA is a Dutch developed and produced disinfectant based on glutaraldehyde and quaternary ammonium compounds. The product has a biocide registration for disinfection of empty greenhouses and a biocide registration for algae treatment. Intra Multi-Des GA eliminates algae by damaging and breaking through the algae cell wall. This process kills the algae. Intra Multi-Des GA is developed to reach optimum hygiene standards by adequate disinfection with a low as possible concentration. The biocide registration number of Multi-Des GA in the Netherlands is 13969N. The product has an approval for up to three biocide classes; PT02, PT03and PT04.
