US: Grower harvest 1600 gr. tomato
Gardener Dale K. Thurber, of West Valley City in Salt Lake County broke the state record last week for growing the heaviest tomato. This uniquely shaped fruit came in at 1600 grams, during an official weigh-in at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. That’s just a few ounces more than the previous state record. Of course, Thurber won’t be eating the giant tomato which had started to mold.
Thurber said big tomatoes like this are given a label so seeds can be tracked among growers. This one is now called Big Zac (3.486 Thurber 2012)(3.94 Pennington 2010). Learn more about Thurber’s garden adventures at Delectation of Tomatoes.
