Spain maintains a clearly dominant role in the EU lettuce market, where it accounts for more than half of the sales within the European Union. This is the result of a report based on Eurostat data analysed by Hortoinfo, which confirms the continuity of this leadership over the last twenty years.
In 2025, lettuce exports to EU countries reached 499.39 million kilos, representing around 50.5% of the EU total. In economic terms, these sales generated 690.34 million euros, with an average price of 1.38 euros per kilo.
The European lettuce market as a whole moved around 988 million kilos that year, with a total value of 1,578 million euros, in a context of sustained growth compared to two decades ago, although conditioned by statistical changes such as the exit of the United Kingdom from the bloc.
Behind Spain, the main suppliers to the EU market are the Netherlands and Italy, which alternate positions in the ranking. In 2025, Dutch exports reached 135.26 million kilos, while Italy sold 129.66 million. Further behind are Germany and France, with much lower volumes.
In terms of value, Italy stands out for its higher average prices, followed by the Netherlands, while Spain maintains its leadership in volume with a tighter price structure compared to other competitors.
Analysis of the long-term evolution reflects an increase of more than 30% in Spanish sales in the EU over two decades, consolidating its position as the main supplier of lettuce in the EU market.
