First Dutch courgette fleurs on their way to chefs again

In early January, young courgette plants were once again planted at CourgetteFleur Zwinkels in Netherlands. Every year, the challenge is to ensure optimal plant growth, developing a strong structure that forms a solid foundation for the entire season. Weather conditions play a significant role in this process. That's why it remains a magical moment each year when the first flowers begin to bloom, shared growers Johan and Guus Zwinkels.

The beautiful sunny weather over the past few days has given the plants a growth boost after a period of little to no sunlight. "Yesterday afternoon, it was sunny, and without heating, the temperature in the greenhouse reached 24 degrees Celsius at the warmest moment," they say.

Bumblebees quickly find their way to the bright yellow flowers in the heated Westland greenhouses, ensuring pollination. Soon after, the first orders for CourgetteFleur started coming in. The flowers are harvested, packaged, and delivered. Shortly after, they arrive at a chef's kitchen, where they are transformed into a beautiful and delicious dish. "It truly feels like spring and the beginning of what we hope will be another fantastic season."

The Courgette Fleur and the Fioretta are available again. The yellow CourgetteFleur and the Mini Courgette, in both green and yellow, will be available in a few weeks.

Direct sales
Growers never work with stock, as the flowers bloom for only one day. Early in the morning, everything is harvested fresh to order and immediately flow-packed. The short supply chain ensures the product reaches its final destination quickly. "The fresher the product, the better the final result on the plate," they say.

All products are GlobalGAP, GRASP, and PlanetProof certified. "We make the maximum possible organic effort to deliver the cleanest product with an excellent shelf life. Only then can we ensure the top quality that makes us proud."

In addition to their courgette specialties, the Westland growers also produce standard green and yellow courgettes in various sizes and packaging. These are sold under the Courgette Royale brand. "Within our company, we manage the entire process, from cultivation to sales. Our sales team is closely involved in production, harvesting, packaging, and planning. This ensures better availability, freshness, and quality." The Westland growers have had full in-house sales since 2024.
