“We are increasing our cucumber sales volume by 25%”

France: Kultive buys Marchal Greenhouses

French greenhouse company Kultive kicked off 2025 with a big development: CASAY (Coopérative Agricole des Serristes de l'Aube et de l'Yonne), one of its three production organizations, has acquired Marchal greenhouses, a key player in cucumber production in the Grand-Est region. "The takeover was finalized at the end of December, and sales will begin at the end of next week," explains Alexandre Picault, Kultive's General and Sales Director. With 11.5 hectares of greenhouses now under its management, Kultive expects to market approximately 30,000 tons of produce this year.

Logistical savings for growers
This significant volume increase boosts the company's sales potential, consolidating its position as France's leading cucumber producer and distributor. "The advantage is that we are already present in all major supermarket chains. Since this production was already in place, we foresee no barriers to the project's commercial success. Instead, this acquisition strengthens our geographical presence, which was previously concentrated in the northern half of France. Now, our position in the Grand-Est region is reinforced."

Beyond this regional expansion, the increase in marketed volumes also presents cost-saving opportunities. "The goal is to reduce logistical costs by a few cents per unit—savings that will directly benefit producers," adds Picault.

Aiming for a more regionalized offer
To ensure a seamless transition, no major operational changes are planned for 2025. "Our customers responded positively when we announced the takeover. The objective is not to impose changes but to strengthen the regional identity of our offer. Initially, we will maintain the existing packaging, which highlights the 'Lorraine production' label—an important distinction for some consumers in eastern France."

Strong marketing prospects
While the season has already begun for some, most French cucumber producers are gearing up for their first sales. "This year, French cucumbers are expected to arrive slightly earlier than usual in several production areas. This aligns well with current demand, especially given the limited availability of Spanish cucumbers on the market. This gives us confidence that the season will start off strong. The rest will depend on consumer demand, but the key is ensuring our products are on store shelves early so that everything aligns when we reach peak sales."
