For the first time, a quarantine phytosanitary zone has been established in the Amur Region due to the presence of western flower thrips. These tiny insects damage flowers and vegetables and are vectors for plant viral diseases. Although Amur specialists had previously found these pests in imported products, a quarantine has now been imposed on an area covering 11,234 square meters within the greenhouse complexes of Blagoveshchensk.
According to the Rosselkhoznadzor administration, the quarantine phytosanitary zone and regime were instituted on May 28. During monitoring of the phytosanitary condition of the Russian Federation, specialists identified two instances of western flower thrips in Blagoveshchensk greenhouses.
Due to its high harmfulness, the western flower thrips is listed among the quarantine pests with limited distribution within the Eurasian Economic Union. Phytosanitary measures are currently being applied to affected products, including biological and chemical pest control methods, as explained by the administration's press service.
Flowers have been placed under quarantine, and before any seedlings are planted in the ground, Amur Rosselkhoznadzor specialists will inspect the products for the presence of this quarantine pest.
