Jordan government hopes to lower lemon prices via imports

Agriculture Minister Khaled Hneifat revealed that Jordan's daily lemon production stands at 60 tons, against a market demand of 200 tons. To bridge this gap, the country began importing lemons in mid-April, aiming to cover a 7,000-ton deficit for the months of June, July, and August.

This import initiative includes approximately 750 tons of African lemons, anticipated to reduce the current market price. Hneifat assured that prices are expected to decrease at the start of the next week. Additionally, the ministry has issued 170 import licenses for lemons, primarily from South Africa and Turkey, to facilitate this process. Delays in shipment are attributed to traders not fully utilizing these licenses.
