Fruit and vegetable prices down in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Markets (SCCEM) reported a decrease in the prices of most fruits and vegetables towards the end of May. The market price index (MPI), a measure for tracking the movement of wholesale food prices, declined by 1.21 percent to 2,114 points, a drop from the previous week's 2,140 points. The MPI's base level, set at 1,000 points, was established in 2005.

The price reduction was notable in several categories. Imported cucumbers decreased by 8.8 percent to BGN 1.98 per kilogram, while greenhouse cucumbers saw a more significant reduction of 10.9 percent, pricing at BGN 2.53 per kilogram. Greenhouse tomatoes experienced a 9 percent decrease to BGN 2.74 per kilogram. Potatoes also saw a decline in price by 2.7 percent, reaching BGN 1.43 per kilogram.

Conversely, the price for carrots went up by 7.6 percent to BGN 1.42 per kilogram. However, ripe imported onions dropped significantly by 13.9 percent to BGN 1.49 per kilogram, and cabbage prices fell by 7.7 percent to BGN 0.84 per kilogram.

In the fruit sector, imported apples decreased by 2.9 percent to BGN 1.70 per kilogram. Lemons, on the other hand, saw a price increase of 3.3 percent to BGN 2.47 per kilogram. Bananas experienced a slight decrease of 0.4 percent to BGN 2.71 per kilogram, while imported strawberries had a minor price increase of 0.7 percent to BGN 4.15 per kilogram. Oranges recorded a small rise of 0.6 percent to BGN 1.82 per kilogram.
