Eastern India

Extreme heatwave threatens vegetable crops, but rains may raise yields

India has been experiencing record heatwave conditions, significantly affecting vegetable crops. The federal government is closely monitoring the situation to assess its impact on overall production. The recent rainfall and storms in Eastern India, which have helped bridge the rainfall deficit from March to May, are expected to enhance the cultivation of vegetables in the region.

Additionally, the government anticipates a decrease in the prices of tur and urad pulses, attributing this to improved cultivation methods and the forecast of an above-normal monsoon across the country. Furthermore, the stability of onion prices and other essential commodities has been attributed to the government's intervention. There is an expectation of better price realisation for pulses by farmers in states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Karnataka.
