Radish demand to pick up closer to Canada Day and 4th of July

The radish supply is good right now. "We started stronger this year so there's a little bit more supply," says Yannick Guerin of Jardins A Guérin & Fils Inc. "There was nice weather–it was hot with a little bit of rain so those are good conditions to grow radishes."

For Jardins A Guérin & Fils, 70 percent of its radishes are sold in Ontario and the U.S. with the remaining in Quebec. Harvest began on May 16 of low volume only and greater volume began shipping last week. Harvest should go until the beginning of November, until approximately the first freeze.

Slightly less demand
As for radish demand, it's slightly softer than usual. "Maybe it's because consumers have less money in their pocket–we don't know. Fruit and vegetable movement in general is a bit slower than usual," says Guerin, noting that the start of the season is generally slow in movement but picks up around June 24 to the first of July, in the lead-up to Canada Day/July 4th. "That's when demand is greatest in the summer because people like to eat radishes when the temperatures are around 20-25 degrees. When it's too hot outside, they prefer to buy things like watermelon," he says.

Meanwhile, the pricing on radishes is a bit softer this year though it's expected to strengthen in September when the temperatures are lower and there's less supply.
