The chairman of the Tomato Out Growers Association of Nigeria (TOGAN) in Kano State, Sani Danladi, identified Tuta absoluta as the primary factor for the recent surge in tomato prices across Nigeria. This pest, also known as tomato leaf miner or 'Tomato Ebola,' has significantly affected tomato crops, leading to a sharp increase in prices due to scarcity.
Danladi highlighted that the pest reemerged in several states including Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, and Jigawa in February, causing widespread concern among consumers and farmers alike. The pest's impact was notably severe in 2016, leading to a substantial loss in tomato production and a subsequent price hike. Despite efforts to control the pest, it has continued to affect tomato production, with a recent resurgence in Kano causing considerable damage to farms. Danladi urged the government to provide assistance to farmers to combat this persistent threat. Additionally, he noted the challenge of high temperatures exacerbating the situation. The association is actively working on sensitizing farmers on how to manage and adapt to the presence of Tuta absoluta to mitigate its impact on tomato production.
