Fire devastates a fruit and vegetable greenhouse in El Ejido

On Monday night, a spectacular fire engulfed the warehouse of the Mabe fruit and vegetable cooperative, located in the Norias de Daza area, in the Spanish municipality of El Ejido, Almeria. Firefighters from the Poniente Consortium, medical staff, as well as the Local Police and the Civil Guard, were dispatched to the scene. There have been no reports of injuries since, as explained by the SAT, fortunately, most of the workers had left when the smoke started.

According to local media, the burned warehouse, measuring 25,000 square meters, was a "practically new" facility with only a few years of activity. In addition to structural damage to the building, the fire also destroyed the products stored inside, mainly watermelons, for which the campaign is in full swing, although the damages have yet to be quantified.

The fire had yet to be extinguished last night and four firefighter units were working on it. The Civil Guard evacuated the company's facilities and has been monitoring the area.

Although the road is closed to traffic, caution is advised in the nearby areas and on the A7 highway due to excessive smoke. It is also recommended that nearby homes close their windows to avoid being affected by the intense smoke.

In the following video La Voz de Almería shares images of the fire:

As reported by the cooperative itself, Mabe has more than 450 members in the agricultural sector and owns more than 1,100 hectares of crops. The company has a turnover of around 145 million euros and is among the top ten companies in the sector in the province.
