VBT figures week 19

Summer weather benefits Belgium cucumber prices

Last week, the cucumber price surged to nearly 70 euro cents each, marking an unusually high price for this time of year. This is particularly striking given the very poor price formation exactly a year ago. While tomato prices have dropped, they are in line with the five-year average, according to the median prices for week 19 from the auctions of the Association of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives (VBT).

The median price for loose tomatoes was 67 euro cents in week 19. Cluster tomatoes were priced at 76 euro cents per kilo.

Cucumber prices peaked in the week as temperatures continued to rise to summery levels of well over twenty degrees Celsius. This boosted demand, and consequently, prices, with the median price reaching 69.9 euro cents each.

The median price for bell peppers, considering all colors combined, matched the price formation in 2023. Last week, prices for yellow and red on the clock rose to 2.36 euros per kilo for yellow and 2.625 euros for red.

A similar price spike as seen for cucumbers was also noted for lettuce. Here, the per-piece price was slightly higher than in week 18: 68 euro cents each in week 19.

The median price for strawberries over week 19 was 4.49 euros per kilo. Elsanta, just under 4.60 euros, and Sonsation at 4.86 euros per kilo, fetched higher prices.
