New Zealand: 11-hectare greenhouse opens in Tucker Road

LeaderBrand has officially opened its 11-hectare mega-greenhouse-covered vegetable production project on Tucker Road. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones did the honours there yesterday afternoon.

In October 2019, the Provincial Development Unit (now Kānoa, Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit) approved a Provincial Growth Fund loan to help fund the construction to further boost regional development in Tairāwhiti.

"The aim of the project has been to accelerate crop growth year-round in a more sustainable manner, helping to mitigate weather impacts, significantly reducing fertilizer and water usage, as well as protecting soil structure," LeaderBrand chief executive Richard Burke said.

"It also ensures job security and supports Tairāwhiti's $62.5 million horticulture and fruit industry." Mr Jones was joined by local dignitaries, including Mayor Rehette Stoltz, to officially open the greenhouses with a ribbon cutting before taking a tour of the facility.
