Maricopa Unified School District proposes expansion of the Career and Technical Education AgriScience Program at Desert Sunrise High School, where a new greenhouse will be constructed for the 2024-25 school year.
The $400,000 facility is pending board approval on April 24. Construction would begin by July 24 at the latest, likely sooner. The development includes the state-of-the-art greenhouse and versatile animal pens to enhance hands-on learning in agricultural practices, said MUSD spokesperson Mishell Terry,
Led by AgriScience Instructor Victoria Imhoff, the expansion has been collaboratively designed with educators, students, and industry specialists. "The project aims to integrate cutting-edge agricultural technologies with foundational learning, promoting innovation and sustainability," Terry said.
The greenhouse will be home to student projects, such as aquaponics, using fish waste as natural plant fertilizer. The facility will also support community engagement activities like the sale of poinsettias and succulents.
