Patrick Haider from Perlinger Vegetables in Wallern:

Early start to the Austrian greenhouse vegetable harvest

Typically, cucumbers, bell peppers, and radishes from local glasshouses and polytunnels are not available until early March at the earliest. However, this year, the Austrian vegetable harvest is getting off to an unusually early start. "As dark and poor as the spring of 2023 was, this year it's sunny and mild," says Patrick Haider of Perlinger Vegetables in Wallern. In his greenhouses, green peppers and cucumbers are already being harvested. The radishes in the polytunnels are ripe, and the lettuce is also ready to make its way onto local plates. "Everything is growing and flourishing, the quality is right, we are very satisfied," Haider told the Kronen Zeitung.

Tomatoes by Easter
The situation is similar at Gartenbau Sattler in Tadten. Here, tomatoes are grown on five hectares. Since the fruits are no longer illuminated due to high energy prices, the red berries are only "ready" by mid to late March. "Our tomatoes will be on the market by Easter," Lukas Sattler promises.
