Nearly 20 years of growing phalaenopsis and still growing strong

Growing quality Phalaenopsis Orchids efficiently and responsibly, all year round for the local market. This was the aim of the brothers Mike and Neil van Steekelenburg when they founded CosMic Plants Inc. in Beamsville Ontario in 2004. They started with a 5,600m2 greenhouse and now grow orchids on a total of 3ha over 2 locations. Mother’s Day is their biggest holiday and according to Cosmic Plant’s Arjan Noordam, despite some challenges, the run-up so far is great. Let's ask Joe Roberts of ForemostCo, Inc., a US-based company that was founded as Foremost Foliage in 1987. Since then, the company has undergone constant growth and expansion to become one of the largest importers of live plants to the United States.

"We wanted full control of our rooting container and substrate," says New Hampshire young plant grower Doug Cole of D.S. Cole Growers when talking about their decision to switch from paperpots to Growcoons. About three years ago, they started to work with this propagation product, and after good first results, they decided to implement this system, in a joint effort with Modiform and Klasmann-Deilmann, in their production of young plants. And along the way, Cole and his team noticed increasingly more benefits, like easier sticking and reduced rooting time to name a few.

New high tech cuttings company officially opened in the Netherlands

2.4 million cuttings a day, 12 million per week, and 500 million a year. Last Saturday, November 25, Deliflor Hoogveld, the new cuttings company of Deliflor (part of Beekenkamp) and Kreling Chrysanten, was officially opened.

Monica Miranda, Ikebana Co SAS:

“The first production of sweet peas in the history of Colombia”

One of the largest exporters of sweat peas in Japan, Universal Flower Service co., Ltd., decided to grow their Japanese sweat pea varieties in Colombia. They established Ikebana Co. SAS, and after three years of hard work, they are currently producing 12 varieties on 2 ha in El Rosal, Cundinamarca. Last April, they completed the first shipment from Bogota airport to the USA and are currently exporting them, all under the brand name Bijo, to Europe and South Korea. In this article, Monica Miranda, one of the owners of Ikebana Co SAS, tells us more about the company, how it started, their varieties, and future plans.

Photo report: IFPA Floral Show 2023

The Global Fresh Produce & Floral Show, hosted in Anaheim by the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) last week, featured an impressive array of over 120 stands in the floral pavilion, making it one of the largest events of its kind. This show primarily caters to North American fresh category buyers, encompassing both produce and floral products. The feedback from most exhibitors was overwhelmingly positive.

Photo Report IPM Essen 2023

Here it is, the photo report of the IPM Essen. But before we dive into the pictures, first some statistics. From January 24-27, the Messe Essen in Essen welcomed over 40,000 trade visitors from more than 100 countries. At the show, there were 1,330 companies from 46 nations presenting their innovations and new products in the fields of plants, technology, floristry and garden features.

Proflora 2023 has come to an end. And it was a special edition. The trade show was not only already sold out in January, but they also celebrated their 30th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the organizers, Asocolflores. And it was again a well-visited edition, too. Statistics are not in yet, but exhibitors said that it was not only busy (particularly on the second day) but that they also welcomed visitors from all over the world.
