New research project to study crisp lettuce grown with biological pest control

Grofondet supports a number of projects that explore alternative methods to replace the use of chemical pesticides. The projects include everything from the use of farm animals to new technology. In this project, it is the popular Norwegian crispy salad that takes center stage.

The project led by Gartnerhallen at Vårli Gård og Gartneri, has the goal of supplying crispy salad using alternative pesticides. In order to realize the vision, they have entered into a collaboration with Biologisk AS.

The goal is to find methods that detect the pests at an earlier stage, avoiding the need for chemical pesticides. The project will both explore how modern technology, such as digital glue traps, monitoring, and drones, can ensure that the pests are detected and dealt with before they become a threat.

In addition to the technological aspects of the project, the implementation of beneficial animals in greenhouse production will also be explored. By introducing natural enemies of the pests, a balance can be created in the ecosystem that reduces the need for chemical pesticides.
