Theo Hatzivassiliadis from Hans Kuffer GmbH:

"High demand for first Greek strawberries in England and Germany"

The Greek strawberry season is starting slightly late this year. "Fewer potted plants were planted this year. In general, it was possible to plant later this year because the young plants arrived later, and there were also quality problems with the late varieties. This, in turn, meant that these plants had to be replanted. All in all, the start of the season was delayed by two weeks," says Theo Hatzivassiliadis from Hans Kuffer GmbH.

The direct importer based in Munich visited some suppliers in Greece in week 45 to enquire about the situation on-site. He expects larger quantities from 10 February. "Overall, strawberries are growing and thriving on around 2,000 hectares this year, which is an increase of ten percent compared to last year. The first plants were harvested in week 43."

Despite the delay, the initial signs for this year's season are particularly positive, the Greece specialist continues. "Quality, ripeness, and fruit size are excellent overall. In addition, the export markets are particularly receptive, which is reflected in the huge demand for Greek strawberries for shipments to Germany and England in particular, with very high prices," it concludes.
