US (PA): Greenhouse opens Lewisburg students to new experiences

Lewisburg Area senior Summer Evans has never grown her own food or farmed. Like many other students in the Lewisburg Area’s new science curriculum “Sustainability: Farm-to-Table,” this is Evan’s first time gardening. The class takes place in the new $308,517 greenhouse behind the high school where 32 students across two classes tend to the gardens and raise egg-laying chickens seven days a week.

“I really have been enjoying it,” said Evans, 17. “Environmental science is really cool to me. It’s been fun to get a hands-on experience. If not as a career, I’ll definitely pursue it as a minor or join clubs. Throughout high school, I learned I love environmental science a lot. I may not pursue it as a major or career, but I’m definitely going to keep it as a very important part of my life.”

The greenhouse is funded by donations from the Green Dragon Foundation. It was completed for the 2023-24 school year by general contractor Martin’s Construction, of Mifflinburg, and electrical contractor B.A. Meixel, of Jersey Shore.

“It’s really cool,” said Evans. “It’s super exciting to see how this is going to be used for many, many years. It’s an awesome addition to a really great school.”
