"Many Hamas hostages are Thai tomato pickers"

Hamas is currently holding an estimated 220 Israelis hostage in Gaza. Of those, about a quarter are Thai. So the Israeli government reported* last Wednesday. These people are almost all migrant workers working in Israel's agriculture and horticulture sectors.

Belgian newspaper De Morgen published an article detailing the background of these roughly 30,000 migrant workers. In Israel, they make up almost the entire manual labor workforce in these sectors but are virtually invisible in society.

*As per Reuters. A Thai source later mentioned 18, in addition to 33 Thai citizens killed and 18 injured.
