Solar greenhouse also gets agricultural purpose

A greenhouse in Venlo has been transformed into a 5.5-megawatt solar panel greenhouse. The space under the panels will be used for 'an agricultural purpose.'

Protium realized the project together with partners. As the greenhouse has two different roof widths, both 440 Wp panels and 505 Wp panels were used. The 11,724 solar panels can start generating 4.6 million kWh annually.

During an intensive construction period of about three months, the old greenhouse deck was completely renovated. The glass, rods, and ridge were removed to install a new custom-made deck, including solar panels, on top of the existing gutters.

Additional panels
Hylke Kuiken, the project manager involved in this project, emphasizes the complexity of managing different partnerships: "During implementation, you have to deal with many different parties. This requires a keen eye to make sure everything runs smoothly. It is important to be dynamic; during construction, you sometimes have to deal with unforeseen circumstances and have to come up with solutions."

He adds, "During construction, it turned out that a number of roofs could still be made suitable for additional solar panels with a small adjustment. We then quickly switched with all parties involved to make this possible, which resulted in more than 100 extra panels than we had calculated beforehand."

In addition to, Protium, Eturn, Kerklaan, Alfen, Trafohuis, ING, Novar, Innax, Fudura, Solarif, Vandebron, Robisol, and Beemster Infra were involved in the project.
