UK growers hope DEFRA review will lead to more equitable industry standards

In the UK, the upcoming review by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs is seen as a crucial moment for growers and the entire horticulture supply chain. The current system, where the tendering process to supermarkets is heavily skewed towards cost reduction, has been a significant point of contention. The growers argue that this approach undermines the intrinsic value of their produce, leading to a compromise in quality and consumer experience.

The existing pricing model, where the focus is predominantly on reducing costs, has led to a scenario where the earnings of the growers have remained static despite a noticeable increase in retail prices. This disparity in earnings and the retail price index has led to an unsustainable economic model for the growers, threatening the very essence of the horticulture industry.

Essentially, the Defra review is not just a procedural necessity but is seen as a potential turning point. It embodies the aspirations of growers for a system that is equitable, fair, and sustainable.
