The borehole near the site of the Waldweihnacht in Halsbach has made a find. Experts found a temperature of over 107°C and a flow rate of over 100 liters/second. Extensive tests show this. After reaching the target depth of 3,050 meters and a drilling length of 4,750 meters, the well was completed on September 13, 2023.
The success is all the more remarkable because it shows that it pays to keep at it; hot water (approx. 125°C) was found in the first production well in May, but the flow rate was not sufficient for economical operation. Also, a sidetrack (drilling into another discovery area at the same depth) did not bring the desired result.
Naturwärme Kirchweidach-Halsbach analyzed all previous seismic results together with experts and came to the conclusion that drilling into the so-called "Hochscholle" would make sense. This area of the Malm layer has detached itself from the actual layer over millions of years and has migrated upward about 450 meters.
The success proves the experts right: After extensive tests, the good discoverability of this borehole can be reported. What happens next? The next step is a second well. This is known as a re-injection well. In this case, the cooled geothermal water is returned in a closed circuit to the same depth as the production well and thus does not leave the drilling site. Both boreholes are located about ten meters apart, a so-called hydrothermal doublet. A heat exchanger is expected to be constructed here in the spring of 2024 to provide heat to the consumers.
