Last week, vine tomato prices plummeted on the French market. “We went from 1.30€ to 1€ per kg between Monday and Friday,” explains Guilhem Flammen, director of Greenery France. Production has indeed picked up again, but the unpleasant weather, with rain and low temperatures in several European countries, has led to a drop in consumption.

The situation is relatively similar for beefsteak tomatoes, but the prices of round tomatoes have been maintained despite the general drop in consumption. “French schools are starting again this week, so the demand for round tomatoes from local authorities, canteens, and company restaurants has been quite good. Prices started at 0.80 €/kg at the beginning of last week, and they have now reached 1 €/kg.”
Whether in France, Belgium, or the Netherlands, production is not at full capacity. “Some producers are ending production earlier than expected. We have fewer quantities than usual for this time of year due to this summer’s weather conditions.”

This week, however, volumes should increase again thanks to the summer temperatures, with 30 degrees announced in some regions. “We hope that consumption will be boosted by the nice weather, the start of the school year, and the beginning of the month, which is typically accompanied by greater purchasing power.”
